The most severe damage was in China where approximately 4 million people were affected, with almost 10,000 homes destroyed by the storm. Hurricane Rita (Florida) - September 2005120 people died in the United States of America in September 2005 when Hurricane Rita made landfall in the southeastern states. Severe damage from the winds and subsequent flooding affected thousands of people and destroyed several small communities. Hurricane Max (California) - September 2005This Envisat image shows Hurricane Max close to the coast of California in September 2005. Hurricane Ophelia (North Carolina) - September 2005Hurricane Ophelia caused moderate damage in the southeastern United States in September 2005 and three people died during the storm. Typhoon Nabi (Japan) - September 2005Typhoon Nabi caused 21 deaths in Japan in September 2005 and caused widespread flooding and landslides. Over 20,000 homes were evacuated during the disaster. Hurricane Katrina (Florida) - August 2005Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst storms to strike the United States in recorded history when it made landfall in the Gulf coast in August 2005. 1833 people died and the city of New Orleans was particularly affected, with 80% of the city inundated leading to years of recovery. Typhoon Matsa (Taiwan/China) - August 200525 people died when Typhoon Matsa passed over Taiwan and China in August 2005. Thousands of homes were destroyed and thousands more inundated by heavy rain and flooding. Typhoon Talim (Central Pacific Ocean) - August 2005It was estimated that over 15 million people were affected by Typhoon Matsa during August 2005 in Taiwan and China. 150 people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed by flooding and landslides. Typhoon Haitang (Taiwan) - July 2005Millions of people in Taiwan and China were affected by Typhoon Haitang in July 2005. Hundreds of villages and towns were flooded and over two thousand homes destroyed. 13 people were killed. Hurricane Emily (Mexico) - July 2005Hurricane Emily caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and northeastern Mexico in July 2005. 17 people were killed and hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged by the hurricane's powerful winds and storm surges. Thousands of people were affected. Typhoon Muifa (Philippines) - November 200468 people died in the Philippines in November 2004 when Typhoon Muifa passed over the island nation. Over 26,000 homes were destroyed and over three times that many damaged by the storm. Typhoon Nock-ten (Taiwan) - October 2004Flooding caused by heavy rain from Typhoon Nock-ten killed three people in Taiwan during October 2004. Typhoon Tokage (Japan) - October 2004Typhoon Tokage was reportedly one of the worst storms to hit Japan in years when it made landfall in October 2004. The storm caused floods and mudslides which killed 69 people and affected thousands. Typhoon Meari (East China Sea) - September 2004Typhoon Meari lead to the death of 18 people in Japan in September 2004 when the storm brought heavy rain that caused floods and mudslides. Hurricane Ivan (Caribbean Sea) - September 2004Hurricane Ivan killed 91 people in the Caribbean and southeastern United States in September 2004. It was a large storm that caused a great deal of damage in the Caribbean, with several islands suffering severe damage. Typhoon Songda - September 2004Typhoon Songda (locally known as Nina) struck Japan at Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on 05 September 2004. Songda was a powerful storm, and previously affected other islands in the Pacific before reaching Japan. Hurricane Jeanne (Florida) - September 2004Five people died in the southeastern United States in September 2004 due to Hurricane Jeanne. The storm had taken a devastating toll on Haiti, where over three thousand people had been killed a few days before. It had weakened by the time it reached Florida, but still caused flash floods in the United States. Typhoon Megi (South Korea) - August 2004Typhoon Megi struck South Korea at Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on 18 August 2004. Five people were reported killed, 2400 left homeless, and heavy rainfall was experienced between the 17th and 18th. |
