![]() Hurricane Charley (Cuba) - August 2004Hurricane Charley passed over Cuba at Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on 13 August 2004. Four people were killed in the storm, and heavy damage was caused but little flooding as the hurricane passed over the island quickly. ![]() Typhoon Rananim (China) - August 2004Typhoon Rananim struck China at Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on 12 August 2004. A severe storm; Rananim caused damage along the Chinese coast and destroyed 64,300 houses, damaging over 100,000 more and leaving 168 dead. ![]() Hurricane Floyd - September 1999At least 70 deaths are attributed to Hurricane Floyd and its aftermath, which prompted the largest peacetime evacuation in U.S. history. ![]() Typhoon Olga - August 1999Olga developed as a tropical depression about 550 km northwest of Yap on 29th July 1999. It adopted a north-northwestward course and intensified gradually into a typhoon over the next days while heading towards Okinawa, Japan. ![]() Cyclone Rona - February 1999Tropical cyclone Rona has produced Eastern Australia's worst flooding in more than a century and at least seven deaths. About 2,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas, and rail and air corridors were shut down. ![]() Hurricane Mitch - October 1998Hurricane Mitch formed in the southwest Caribbean Sea from a tropical wave about 360 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica late on 21st October. The system initially moved slowly west-ward and intensified into a tropical storm.
![]() Hurricanes Georges and Jeanne - September 1998Georges formed in the far eastern Atlantic on September 15th and reached hurricane status on the 17th. The hurricane moved on a general west-northwesterly course over the next few days reaching maximum wind speeds of 250 km/h. ![]() Hurricane Danielle - August 1998During the lifetime of Hurricane Danielle, wind speeds greater than 100 Kts were recorded. Danielle formed over the central tropical Atlantic ocean on the 24th of August becoming a tropical storm later that afternoon. Danielle reached hurricane status on the 25th and moved on a West-Northwest track for the next 5 days. ![]() Cyclone Yali - March 1998Cyclone Yali spent most of its life in the Fiji area. It moved westwards across the 160 East meridian on the 25th of March to the Australian region for a couple of days before undergoing rapid deepening as an extratropical cyclone and pummelling New Zealand with fast winds, high sea waves and heavy rains. |
