Typhoon Songda (locally known as Nina) struck Japan at Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on 05 September 2004. Songda was a powerful storm, and previously affected other islands in the Pacific before reaching Japan. On the small island of Agrihan, all crops and structures were lost as a result of the damage, and the effect on Japan was severe. The heavy rain and resulting floods caused almost $9 billion in damage and 41 people were killed.
These Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) images were acquired in late August and early September and show the storm's progress in the Pacific Ocean.
