Europe, August 1997 - Due to heavy rain, the worst flooding in decades has hit the Czech Republic and Poland destroying farmland and killing at least 52 people in Poland and 39 in the Czech Republic. In Poland, 300 towns and villages are flooded. In the Czech Republic, the government said nearly 2,700 homes were destroyed by the flooding. Since 10 July, thousands of Czechs and Poles have been evacuated.

On 21 July, hundreds of thousands of Czechs and Germans braced for a second wave of flooding as falling rain continued to fuel the worst natural disaster to hit Central Europe in centuries. Estimates are that the damages may run as high as $2 billion. Such a natural disaster is very unusual in this Polish region, which was not prepared for it. More than 10% of Polish territory was flooded.

On 27 July, despite massive reinforcement efforts and sandbagging, a third dike along the German portion of the Oder River (north the town of Frankfurt an der Oder) gave way, sending water swirling up roof-high.
