Learn about the ground-based, ship-borne, balloon-borne, and airborne campaigns and small satellite field experiments that validate orbiting ESA EO satellites and support future mission development.
  • WIVERNex-UK

    2023

This campaign was designed to extend the Chilbolton ground measurement record that involved analysis of radar observations made by the 94 GHZ radar from the ground at Chilbolton to quantify the accuracy expected for the algorithms for deriving, winds, clouds and precipitation properties for the proposed WIVERN satellite.

  • WindVal III

    2018

The objectives the WindVal III campaign were derived from results, experience and lessons learnt of the last airborne campaigns in 2009, 2015 and 2016.

  • WindVal II

    2016

The objectives for the WindVal II campaign in 2016 were derived from the results, experience and lessons learnt from these last airborne campaigns in 2009 and 2015.

  • WindVal I

    2015

The objectives of the WindVal 1 campaign in 2015 were derived from results, experience and lessons learnt from the previous airborne campaign in 2009.

  • WaddenSAR

    2022

The “WaddenSAR – Airborne bistatic C-band SAR experiment to demonstrate different acquisition geometries” was initiated to support the development of the Earth Explorer 10 Harmony mission.

  • SEN2EXP

    2013

In the SEN2EXP campaign, the data gap for broad leaf forests is addressed as suitable reference datasets of sufficient quality do not exist.

  • IceSAR 2007

    2007

The objectives of IceSAR 2007 campaign was to acquire SAR images and complementary data over sea and land ice for preparation of Sentinel-1 mission and for providing a basis for the assessment of potential applications of Biomass mission.

  • EAGLE

    2006

The general purpose of the EAGLE2006 campaign was: Acquisition of simultaneous multi-angular and multi-sensor (from visible to microwave domain) data over a grassland and a forest.

  • BACCHUS-DOC

    2005

The BACCHUS-DOC Radar and Optical Campaign was an area mapping project of vineyards near Frascati (Italy). ESA required high resolution geo-referenced airborne SAR data of different wavelength and polarisation (preferably polarimetric).

  • AgriSAR 2009

    2009

The AgriSAR 2009 campaign was defined to leverage the RADARSAT-2 mission to better understand and demonstrate the potential for GMES land monitoring user services, particularly in agriculture.

  • AGRISAR 2006

    2006

The AGRISAR 2006 campaign, carried out between 18 April and 2 August 2006, was established to address important specific programmatic needs of Sentinel-1 and -2.
