Minimize Etna Volcano - Italy, November 2006

Rome, Catania Airport, 25 November 2006 (From AFP) - The chief of Italian Protection, Guido Bertolaso, announced that the Island of Sicily would be closed from 25 - 26 November because of ash ejected from the Mount Etna Volcano, which is 5km away from the airport.

Catania Airport had already been closed on 24 November because of the volcanic eruptions of ash which covered the town of Catania with a black fine layer of ash.

Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, had a known phase of activity in July 2006, after three months of activity in autumn 2004. Mr Bertolast specified that the lava flows caused by the new phase are not of particular concern, the phenomenon being limited to a deserted valley on one of the sides of the volcano.
