Minimize Flood - Moscow (Russia), July 2002

MOSCOW, 27 June 2002 (From AFP) - Starting late last week, flooding resulted from torrential rainfall devastated nine of Russia's southern regions, where some 52,000 homes were flooded and more than 5,000 were completely destroyed, emergency officials said.

The death toll is steadily increasing in various territories; 46 people are now reported dead in Stavropol, 10 in Karachayevo-Cherkesia, 16 in Krasnodar territory, 4 in North Ossetia, 1 person in Kabardino-Balkaria and 4 in Chechnya.

The floods forced some 85,000 people to flee their homes and damage has been estimated at nearly 13 billion Rubles (413 million dollars).
