Minimize Flood - Alessandra and Asti (Italy), November 1994

Italy, November 1994 - A strong storm struck the Eastern Alps with heavy rains in northern Italy which produced the region's worst disaster since 1913. Seventy people were killed and 450, 000 hectares were flooded with damages costing $5 billion.

Highways, railways and roads were closed for several days, some requiring months to repair or rebuild. The worst affected areas are; Alba, Asti and Alessandra along the Tanaro River.

A series of ERS-1 Satellite images were acquired during the floods which show the extent of the flooding in some of the worst affected areas.

This image was acquired during the storm which comprises of two standard ERS-1 scenes. The Po and Tanaro Rivers surrounding the Alessandria, Alba and Pavia areas are visible in this image.
