Minimize Forest fires in Amazon region (Brazil) - August 2005

Brazil, 9 August 2005 - Along the south eastern area of the Amazon Rainforest, people are creating islands of rainforest surrounded by farms and ranches. Fire is a common land clearing or land management tool in the region, and the numerous fires detected by Envisat MERIS images below are evidence of this.

The Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) Level 1 images below were acquired on 07 and 08 August 2005 over Amazon State (Brazil). Large areas (centre lower right) with numerous fires are visible.
