This week, our tour of major European cities continues over the city of Constanţa (also Constantsa). It is the capital of Constanţa district on the Black Sea, in south-east Romania and is the country's main seaport.

Constanţa exports oil and cereals and its main industries are fishing, shipbuilding and producing wine. It mainly imports coal, coke, big machinery and textiles. Impressively, the city's archaeology museum was founded in 1879.

Constanţa is the ancient town of Tomi, the place the Roman poet Ovid spent his final years. In the 4th century AD, it was renamed Constantiana to honour the sister of the Roman Emperor Constantine I. Under Turkish domination (1413-1878), the city was called Küstenja. The name was changed to Constanţa in 1878, when Romania got the territory from Bulgaria.

These images acquired by the Landsat 5 and 8 satellites thirty-two years apart, show that the city has changed its urban structure since 1984. In these two images in fact, you can especially see these changes along the coast where the harbour has developed. Also notable is the west of the city, where new infrastructure has sprung up during these years.

Another aim of these images is to promote the opportunity to download Landsat data through the ESA portals, where images captured every day are made available in near real time to the users and the scientific community.
