Gulf of Mexico, April - May 2010

The plan to start choking off oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico was suddenly halted as government officials and BP said further analysis must be done Wednesday before critical tests could proceed. No explanation was given for the decision, and no date was set for when testing would begin on the new, tighter-fitting cap BP installed on the blown-out well Monday. In the meantime, oil continued spewing into the Gulf.

South Korea, December 2007

South Korea's worst ever oil spill spread along a pristine coastal region Monday as the government came under fire amid charges it acted too slowly to limit the disaster. Almost 9,000 troops, police and volunteers armed with shovels and buckets struggled to clean up the huge slick.

Philippines, August 2006

Sludge has washed up on Panay, a large island in the central Philippines, as an oil spill from a sunken tanker spread, threatening rich fishing grounds. Eleven days after the tanker chartered by Petron Corp., the largest oil refiner in the Philippines, sunk off the island of Guimaras, an average of 100-200 litres of oil continued to gush every hour.

Gotland Island (Sweden), May 2005

A 97-kilometer (60-mile) oil slick was observed off Sweden's south-eastern coast near the Baltic Sea island of Gotland. The approximately 25 tonnes of oil were however not expected to cause any major environmental damage as low winds and currents were predicted for the next two days.

Wales (UK), February 1996

On 15 February 1996 the oil tanker Sea Empress struck a rock off St.Anne's Head near the town of Milford Haven. 80,000 tonnes of crude oil were released during the 10 days that elapsed before the emergency team could stem the flow.

Oporto (Portugal), October 1994

On 02 October 1994 the Panamanian oil tanker Cercal struck a rock while entering the harbour of Leixoes (the Oporto harbour), releasing about 1.000 tonnes of crude oil into the sea.
