This Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multitemporal colour composite image is centred over Maracaibo (large bright area, centre right image), capital of Zulia state (northwestern Venezuela).

The city extends along the channel that connects Lake Maracaibo with the Gulf of Venezuela (an arm of the Caribbean Sea). Major centre for the petroleum shipping, Maracaibo is also an important seaport and industrial center of Venezuela. Fed by the Catatumbo, Santa Ana and Chama rivers, Lake Maracaibo is one of the major petroleum deposits present in Venezuela. The deposits are located under and around the coasts.
