Validation Report following the 3rd MERIS data reprocessing

This document prepared by the MERIS Quality Working Group (QWG) corresponds to the Validation Report following the 3rd MERIS data reprocessing. It aims at qualifying and quantifying the accuracy of the MERIS L2 products generated with the version 8.0 of MERIS Ground Segment prototype (MEGS), delivered to the whole community through the ODESA software (http://earth.eo.esa.int/odesa/). It is equivalent to version 6.0 of the Instrument Processing Facilities (IPF) at ESRIN.

The Status of the SCIAMACHY Active Thermal Control (ATC)

The Active Thermal Control System (ATC) is providing thermal stability to SCIAMACHY's optical bench module (OBM). Over the past 10 years in-orbit mission lifetime the ATC has proven extremely reliable. Although regular monitoring has revealed some degradation ??? less than what was predicted before launch ??? only a single adjustment was necessary so far to keep the OBM temperature within the specified limit. The ATC adjustment occurred in October 2008 in orbit 34643 [RD1 with referencing RD3-RD6].

    SCIAMACHY-Exploring-the-Changing-Earths-Atmosphere.pdf

This comprehensive publication describes the SCIAMACHY mission - from the very first ideas to the current results. The targeted readership is not only the existing and potentially new SCIAMACHY data users from undergraduate student level up to researchers new in the fields of atmospheric chemistry and remote sensing but anyone who is keen to learn about SCIAMACHY's efforts to study the atmosphere and its responses to both, natural phenomena and anthropogenic effects.

    SCIAMACHY-1b-to-2-OL-Processing-Algorithm-Theoretical-Basis-Document-Semi-Analytical-Cloud-Retrieval-Algorithm-for-SCIAMACHY-Envisat.pdf

This document gives scientific background and technical information about the Semi-Analytical CloUd Retrieval Algorithm SACURA, and its implementation at DLR-IMF as part of the SCIAMACHY off-line processor. SACURA implemented at DLR has basically the purpose to provide information for corrections of vertical columns of trace gases. Therefore relevant products are Cloud Top Height (CTH) and Cloud Optical Thickness (COT). However, in its original concept SACURA provides more then both parameters. This document focuses on scientific background information for these two parameters. Additionally, limitations of the algorithm are explained. Validation results for CTH are described as well as input and output file formats.

SCIAMACHY Operations Concept III- Instrument States and Onboard Tables (PFM)

This Technical Note (TN) is the third volume in the trilogy of the SCIAMACHY Operation Concept TNs describing the basic knowledge about SCIAMACHY operations planning. It served prior to launch as input to the development of the ENVISAT ground segment, in particular to those systems that are required for mission planning and timelining.

Reference Model for MERIS Level 2 Processing

The specifications provided here define the parameters to be used to generate inherent optical properties for the ocean and atmosphere as a function of geophysical properties and wavelengths, which can be the basis upon which to generate test data and auxiliary parameters needed for operation and end-to-end tests of the MERIS ground segment processor (i.e., mostly to generate water-leaving reflectances or total reflectances at the top of the atmosphere level). Parameters have been selected from various measurements and models in water, surface and atmosphere.
