FDR4ATMOS - New ESA FDR for Atmospheric composition dataset from ERS-2 GOME and Envisat SCIAMACHY

13 Sep 2024

In addition to releasing new datasets for Envisat SCIAMACHY, the European Space Agency (ESA) has advanced the earth observation capabilities by developing an experimental product under the ESA FDR4ATMOS project (Fundamental Data Records in the domain of satellite Atmospheric Composition).

This newly generated Fundamental Data Records for Atmospheric Composition (FDR4ATMOS) V1 dataset in NetCDF format is now openly available for download to anyone with an ESA EO Sign In account via the ESA Heritage Missions online dissemination service for Atmospheric data.

The dataset is a cross-instrument Level 1B product covering the period from 1995 to 2012.

The new product is providing Uncertainty-Quantified observations.
It merges nadir-looking measurements from ERS-2 GOME and Envisat SCIAMACHY, harmonizing solar irradiance and Earth reflectance targeting the retrieval of sulfur dioxide and ozone in the UV, nitrogen dioxide in the VIS, and cloud parameters in the NIR spectral regions.

While the original individual mission datasets will be maintained, users are strongly encouraged to test these new product.

The FDR4ATMOS V1 dataset is currently being extended to include the MetOp GOME-2 series within the FDR4ATMOS follow-on project (2023-2026).
