Release of new Envisat SCIAMACHY reprocessed data

25 Jul 2024

ESA's Envisat SCIAMACHY mission, which ended operations in 2012, continues to yield valuable scientific insights through ongoing data reprocessing efforts.

A new version of the Envisat SCIAMACHY datasets, spanning the mission archive from 2002 to 2012, has been released by the European Space Agency (ESA) and is now openly available via ESA Heritage Missions online dissemination service for Atmospheric data.

Under the ESA FDR4ATMOS project, the Envisat SCIAMACHY data archive has undergone comprehensive reprocessing applying a revised instrument degradation correction scheme and upgraded calibration algorithms to create a new full mission Level 1b dataset in NetCDF format. The current data version is Level 1b version 10, and the Level 2 dataset was regenerated as well to version 7.1. Users are strongly encouraged to make use of the new datasets for optimal results.

Key improvements in the new product baselines include:

  • New NetCDF format, replacing the old Envisat proprietary format
  • New product types: SCI_____1P, SCI_____2P
  • Improved degradation correction based on a scan mirror model and m-factors
  • Revised algorithms for polarisation, SWIR channels correction, and SMR calculation
  • Integration of calibrated lunar measurements into the Level 1b product
  • Inclusion of parameters detailing operational status and instrument configuration
  • Addition of Tropospheric BrO profile

A new Envisat SCIAMACHY Level 2 product (SCI_LIMBO3) containing ozone stratospheric profiles from limb measurements derived from the previous version 6 processor has also been generated. This product is provided separately. For long-term change studies, users are strongly advised to use these specific ozone limb profiles rather than those in the SCIAMACHY Level 2 dataset version 7.1.

All users are recommended to consult the accompanying documentation and the Product User Guides before using the data.

The former version of the SCIAMACHY Level 1 (v8.0X) and Level 2 (v6.01) datasets will remain available via the old FTP service for another 6 months' time.
