Wildfires in Australia16 January 2020 - Wildfires have been burning across Australia since October causing widespread devastation. In this weeks article we have two image comparisons of Kangaroo Island and Wollemi National Park. 
Forest fires in Siberia (Russia) - October 2011Wildfires struck Siberia during October 2011, in what was described as one of the worst fires in Russia that year. Over a hundred hectares of forest burned while over a thousand firefighters battled the blazes. 
Forest fire in Croatia - July 2011A forest fire broke out on the Croatian island of Brac in July 2011. 4000 hectares were affected and dozens of livestock were reported killed. 
Arizona - June 20116000 people were evacuated in Arizona during June 2011, when the worst fire in the state's recorded history occurred. Named the "Wallow Fire", after the area in which the fire started, it burnt 2180 km2 and destroyed 72 buildings. 
Canada - May 2011The entire town of Slave Lake, in Canada, was evacuated in May 2011, when a devastating fire quickly spread through the town from 14-16 May. It was estimated that a third of the town was destroyed in the fire, with over 400 buildings destroyed. 
Forest fires in Mount Carmel (Israel) - December 201044 people died in the Mount Carmel forest fire, which started on the mountain in Israel on 02 December 2010. The fires quickly spread and resulted in 17,000 people being evacuated and 74 buildings destroyed before the fires were extinguished on 05 December. 
Wildfire in Los Angeles (California) - August 2009The Morris and Station fires that affected Los Angeles from August-October 2009 were part of a larger series of wildfires that affected all of California. The fires in Los Angeles killed two firefighters and destroyed 209 buildings. A total of approximately 162,000 acres were burned. 
Forest fires in Attica Region (Greece) - August 2009A series of large forest fires affected the Attica Region of southern Greece from 21-25 August 2009. Thousands of people were evacuated and 600 firefighters battled the blazes, which affected 21,000 hectares. 
Brush fires in Argentina - April 2008300 brush fires affected the provinces of Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos in Argentina during April 2008. Eight people were reported killed and 70,000 hectares were affected. 
Wildfires in Los Angeles and San Diego (California) - October 2007Approximately one million people were evacuated in California due to wildfires across the state from 20 October to 09 November 2007. The worst were in San Diego, where seven people died and over 1400 buildings were destroyed. In Los Angeles over 100,000 acres were burnt and almost 90 buildings were damaged or destroyed. 
Forest fires in Peninsula of Peloponesse (Greece) - August 2007Forest fires broke out in southern Greece on August 24 following the third heatwave the country had experienced in 2007, and killed at least 63 people. 
Wildfires in Canary Islands (Spain) - August 2007Over 11,000 people were forced to evacuate in the Canary Islands due to forest fires on Gran Canaria and Tenerife in July 2007. 24,000 hectares were burnt on the two islands and the fires were reported as the biggest the archipelago had seen in ten years. 
Cabazon (California, USA) - October 2006An act of arson was responsible for the Esperanza fire that was started near Cabazon, California on 26 October 2006. Five firefighters died while trying to protect a house from the flames, which were ultimately stopped on 30 October. Over fifty buildings were destroyed and 40,000 acres burned. 
Forest fires in Galicia (Spain) - August 2006Four people died in Galicia, Spain, in August 2006 due to fores t fires in the region. Thousands of firefighters, soldiers and civilian volunteers battled the fires. 
London (UK) - December 2005A number of explosions at the Hetfordshire Oil Storage Terminal in Hemel Hempstead, UK, caused a large fire on 11 December 2005. 2000 people were evacuated during the potential threat of further explosions and the expanding smoke cloud. The fires were extinguished on 13 December. 
Portugal, August 2005Drought and high temperatures lead to a series of wildfires in Portugal during August 2005. 140,000 hectares were burnt and 15 people died in the central and northern areas of the country. 
Forest fires in Amazon region (Brazil) - August 2005These images acquired by the MERIS instrument aboard Envisat, highlight examples of fire being used for deforestation purposes in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. 
California (USA), October 2003What was reportedly one of the worst fires in California's history struck the state on 25 October 2003. 15 people died in the Cedar Fire, 280,000 hectares were burned and almost 3000 buildings were destroyed. The fires were fully extinguished on 05 December. 
Var region (France), July 2003High summer temperatures caused fires to break out in the Var region of France during July 2003. Thousands of people were forced to evacuate and approximately 9000 hectares were burnt. The fires were reported as being the worst the area had seen in 15 years. 
Samos Island (Greece), July 2000On Thursday 6 July, a fire broke out and burned a large part of the Aegean Island of Samos. Several fires broke out during the week due to high temperatures of up to 40°C, but Samos Island was among the worst affected areas. |
