Dasht-e Lut Desert, Iran: As seen by KOMPSAT-2

The Dasht-e Lut desert in Iran is shown in this KOMPSAT-2 satellite image from 4 December 2011. Dasht-e Lut (which translates to "empty plain") is a salt desert, and one of the hottest and driest locations on Earth. The surface temperature of sand in the desert has been recorded as high as 80 degrees and the area receives very little rain.

In this multispectral 4 m resolution image we can see the mostly flat salt plains on the left and ridges on the right. The ridges are Dasht-e Lut's most distinctive feature, consisting of sand carved by the wind into long ridges that can reach as high as 75 m. The multispectral image highlights terrain in different colours, indicating how strongly they reflect the signal from the instrument.
