Collection Description

The Aeolus Level 2B (L2B) product provides meteorologically representative Horizontal Line-of-sight (HLOS) wind components, derived from Aeolus Level 1B data. It is designed for the use in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and atmospheric scientific research.

The L2B product is generated by processing Level 1B data, applying geophysical corrections and classification algorithms to produce high-quality wind observations. Wind retrievals are performed separately for the Mie and Rayleigh channels, resulting in four types of HLOS winds: Rayleigh-clear, Rayleigh-cloudy, Mie-clear, and Mie-cloudy. These are classified based on atmospheric optical properties, distinguishing between clear and cloudy conditions. Rayleigh HLOS winds undergo several corrections, e.g. the Rayleigh-Brillouin Correction (RBC) to account for temperature and pressure dependence of molecular backscatter using auxiliary meteorological data (AUX_MET and AUX_RBC), and the correction for Mie contamination addressing signal cross-talk for Rayleigh cloudy winds. Mie HLOS winds, by contrast, do not require auxiliary meteorological data. Additionally, a bias-correction is performed for orbital-varying wind biases.

The L2B product is provided both on observation scale (~87 km) and on smaller group scales (horizontal accumulation of measurements between ~3 km and ~87 km). The product ALD_U_N_2B is available as binary data block file (.DBL) with an additional header file (.HDR).
