For the last 30 years, the European Space Agency (ESA) has been providing Earth Observation (EO) data, technical information and data analysis tools in support of EO satellite missions. The HEDAVI (HEritage DAta Visualisation) service enables users to discover a wealth of heritage data from ESA's ERS and Envisat missions, as well as from Landsat-5 and Landsat-7, two important heritage Third Party missions at ESA, through ESA's heritage data programme ‘LTDP'.

The service, which is provided in collaboration with VisioTerra, offers two levels of image visualisation:

  • a basic search tool, for simple selection and visualisation of EO images,
  • an expert search tool, with more specific image selection and with several image rendering options.

The images can be exported in GeoTIFF or KML/KMZ format or shared via Twitter. Further information on functionalities and handling of the tool is provided in the quick start video.

Among others, the Deforestation in Cambodia and the Urban Growth in Dubai showcase environmental changes, which have been detected with the above mentioned satellites and are available in the HEDAVI Gallery.

The following EO products can be visualised within the HEDAVI service:

  • Envisat MERIS full resolution: Full Resolution Swath (FRS)
  • Envisat ASAR medium resolution: Wide Swath Mode (WSM), Image Mode Medium Resolution (IMM), Alternating Polarisation Mode Medium Resolution (APM)
  • ERS SAR medium resolution (IMM) – available in early 2017
  • Landsat-5 TM (over Europe and North-West Africa)
  • Landsat-7 ETM+ (over Europe and North-West Africa)

It is not possible to directly download the above products through HEDAVI, but access to these products is available through ESA's data dissemination servers following a simple user registration.
