Since January 2010 Reiner is at the Institute of Advanced Study of TUM. Before that he was director of the Institute of Astronomical and Physical Geodesy at TUM. He got his doctoral degree in geodesy in Darmstadt and went afterwards as post-doc for two years to the Ohio State University. From 1980 till 1993 he was professor at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands before he took a similar professorship at TUM. He is one of the initiators of the ESA explorer mission GOCE and currently coordinating the high level processing facility of this mission. He is also member of the science advisory board of the International Space Science Institute and former member of the ESA Scientific Advisory Committee.
