Biomass data applications added to Earth Online Visuals

ESA’s newest Earth Explorer, Biomass, is expected to launch later this month. In anticipation of this new mission dedicated to studying Earth’s forests, examples of data applications for Biomass have been added to the Earth Online Visuals website.
Biomass will determine the global distribution of forest biomass by reducing the uncertainty in the calculation of carbon stock and fluxes associated with the terrestrial biosphere. It will provide crucial information about the state of Earth’s forests and data that supports efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation.
The Earth Online Visuals website contains interactive 3D models of ESA’s Earth Explorers and historical missions such as Envisat. The website also visualises examples of applications for data from the missions. The new applications for Biomass cover:
Mangroves
Mangroves are vital protective shields for coastal populations. They act as natural barriers against extreme weather events such as storms, hurricanes, and tsunamis, protecting millions of people living in coastal areas. Conserving and restoring mangrove forests is essential for maintaining their protective functions.
Carbon sequestration

Protecting and restoring the Amazon rainforest is essential for maintaining its role as a carbon sink and mitigating climate change.
Biodiversity
Tropical forests are vital for biodiversity, providing habitats for many species, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. Many endangered species rely on rainforests for survival. Protecting and restoring the Amazon rainforest through sustainable practices and reforestation projects is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and the ecological services this forest provides.
Economic impact of forests

Deforestation
