KOMPSAT-1 was designed to acquire high-resolution imagery of the Earth's surface for applications such as environmental monitoring, land-use mapping, disaster management, urban planning, and agricultural studies. The main objectives were to obtain cartographic imagery of Korea (which were then extended to other regions of the globe) at a 1/25.000 scale and for global ocean colour monitoring to assist the study of biological oceanography.
