Hurricane Wilma (Caribbean Sea), October 2005

Hurricane Wilma, one of the most intense tropical cyclones ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, formed in October 2005, rapidly intensifying to Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale. After making first landfall on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, it crossed the Gulf of Mexico, striking Florida with extensive flooding and wind damage. The first and second images depict Hurricane Wilma's evolution over the Yucatán Peninsula, showing low clouds in blue and both high and low clouds in white. The third image, acquired over the Caribbean Sea, captures Wilma's presence along the coasts of Honduras and Cuba, with highlighted red coastlines for clarity.
