In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch struck Central America, particularly devastating Honduras and Nicaragua with catastrophic flooding and mudslides. The first two images, captured by a NOAA satellite on October 26 and 27, respectively, show Hurricane Mitch as it moved over the Caribbean, approaching Honduras. The third image, from an ERS-2 Wind Scatterometer, shows Hurricane Mitch near the coast of Honduras with a recorded maximum wind speed of 115 knots. The fourth image, from the GOES-8 satellite, depicts the hurricane on October 30, with a wind speed of 50 knots. The fifth image, captured on November 5, 1998, shows the extensive flooding in the area between San Pedro Sula and the Ulúa River. The last image is a multi-temporal composite, merging data from November 5, 1998, and October 16, 1997, to illustrate changes and the extent of flooding in the same region.
