Radar views of Mount Etna, Italy: As seen by COSMO-SkyMed and ERS-2

These COSMO-SkyMed and ERS-2 radar views show Mount Etna, Italy, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. The volcano is monitored continuously by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which tracks seismic activity, gas emissions, and surface changes.

The two images, acquired on 10 December 2003 and 15 January 2015, show the volcano at different resolutions. The COSMO-SkyMed image offers a close view of the volcano and its terrain, while ERS-2's broad resolution offers a view of the wider area. Both radar views clearly highlight the summit and surrounding terrain, offering valuable insights into Etna’s dynamic volcanic behaviour.

The ERS-2 image is a SAR Precision Product, while the COSMO-SkyMed image is captured in STRIPMAP HIMAGE mode.
