Earthquake in Izmit (Türkiye), August 1999

On 16 August 1999, a severe earthquake near Izmit, Türkiye, ignited an oil refinery and caused widespread destruction. These Landsat-5 and 7 images from 17 and 18 August 1999 capture the aftermath in Istanbul, Darica, and Derince. The first image shows Derince with the refinery and emerging smoke. The second image enhances the first with merged bands for greater clarity. The third multi-temporal image overlays pre- and post-earthquake scenes to highlight changes, including smoke plumes and seismic land shifts. Subsequent images focus on Derince’s landscape after the quake, with red circles indicating fires and the final image pinpointing fire hotspots using specific spectral bands.
