Urban Evolution of Dubai: A Satellite Perspective from 1984 to 2017

Dubai is located in the northeast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is the largest city in the country, quickly developing into a commercial hub for the region. These satellite images show the development along the Dubai coast over the years. The first pair depicts changes from 1991 to 2017, with the most notable differences being the Palm Islands; artificial islands constructed on reclaimed land off the coast of the city. Visible in this comparison are the Palm Jebel Ali, the Palm Jumeirah, and the World Islands. The third, fourth, and fifth images are collages of satellite images depicting the building phases of the artificial islands along the coast from April 1984 to May 2003, from March 1993 to March 2011, and from December 2006 to July 2010, respectively. The sixth image is a multi-layer image, created by merging images captured in 1993, 1999, and 2010. Notable in this image is the area highlighted in green, showing the two artificial islands under construction. The last image is a collage of pictures used to create the previous multi-layer image.
