How to access Earth Observation data distributed by ESA

Discover and download the Earth Observation data you need from the broad catalogue of missions
visiting the Earth Online portal where you can either:

  • navigate through the list of available datasets
  • use the search bar to identify the data needed

In the data description page of each dataset, in the “How To Access Data” section, follow the step-by-step instructions to request access to the specific dataset. If you do not have an EO Sign-In account, please create one.

Depending on the dataset, a slightly different access procedure is applied to reflect the data access rights and the dissemination mechanism.

Open access

Various datasets are available without login and the link to the data repository can be found in the
data description page under “How To Access Data”.

EO Sign In authentication

For some datasets, you only need to enter your EO Sign-In credentials.

The dissemination service can be accessed using the link under “How To Access Data” in the relevant data description page. A log in with your EO Sign In account is required before being able to download data.

Fast Registration with immediate access

Some ESA and TPM datasets (e.g. MIPAS, SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, etc.) require specific credentials,
different from the user’s EO Sign-In account; the user can obtain these credentials by following the step-by-step instructions in the “How To Access Data” section in the relevant data description page.
During the registration some basic information (name, surname, email, institution) will be requested
at the first submission only.

The ESA Campaign datasets , concerning ground-based, ship-borne, balloon-borne, and airborne
campaigns that ESA has conducted since 1998 fall within this data category. The link provided in the
Data” section of the campaign description page takes you to the access request submission area.

Fast Registration with Approval

Some datasets involve a preliminary registration to be verified by the EOHelp Team. Basic information is requested; you can reach the Data Access Request (DAR) submission area using the link under "How To Access Data" in the relevant data description page (step-by-step instructions are provided).

Procedures Requiring Evaluation

  • Data Service Request

A few datasets (due to technical, financial or legal constraints), require the submission and approval
of a short proposal through the Data Service Request interface (DSR).
In the dataset description page, use the link under "How To Access Data" to start preparing your Data Service Request; when you have provided all needed information, proceed to the Terms and Conditions forms to sign the T&C ticks, then submit the DSR for evaluation.

  • Project Proposal

Some data, usually on-demand TPM products, are available subject to Project Proposal acceptance.
In the dataset description page, use the link under ‘How To Access Data’ to create a new project
proposal (step-by-step instructions are provided). See guideline ‘How to guide for submitting  project proposal’ for further detailed instructions.

Proposals are reviewed and product/programming quotas are assigned by ESA/TPM data provider upon
acceptance of the project.

Data periodically made available by ESA under ‘Announcement of Opportunities’ (AOs) also require a
project proposal, fitting objectives, restrictions and deadlines of the AO.

External Data

In the dataset description page, you can use the link under “How To Access Data” to directly reach
the external data repository.
