ESA Cal/Val Park User Consultation Workshop

02-Oct - 03-Oct 2023

Virtually on Microsoft Teams

The Cal/Val Park User Consultation workshop will take place as a virtual event on 2 October 2023 (14:00 – 17:00 CET) and 3 October 2023 (14:00 – 17:00 CET). The event will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams for all participants.

The Cal/Val Park is a multi-agency ESA-ASI effort to build a calibration and validation (cal/val) site to support any optical multi- or hyperspectral mission with a GSD below 30 m, with a strong focus on high resolution sensors. The site aims at openly offering data to institutional and commercial Earth Observation (EO) data providers, while promoting the adoption of metrological best practices, stimulating research and innovation in cal/val methods, and ensuring flexibility and scalability to accommodate the needs of future sensors and of other instrument-types, e.g., high resolution thermal.

Within the design phase for the Cal/Val Park, commercial and institutional providers of target missions have been individually asked to describe their requirements for this new cal/val site. Building on these first communications, the Cal/Val User Consultation workshop will give an opportunity to the providers and other partners to present the current status of their cal/val activities, openly discuss requirements related to instruments and targets deployed at the new site, communicate requests for standards and best practices and find synergies between the diverse needs based on different mission characteristics.

The Cal/Val User Consultation workshop will cover

  • An update on the project status and the preliminary design for the Cal/Val Park site.
  • Presentations from providers of optical and thermal EO products, covering their cal/val approach and needs, as well as inputs related to possible targets deployed at the site.
  • A review of requirements related to the design and deployment of instruments and targets at the site.

The workshop aims at consolidating the design requirements for the Cal/Val Park, while stimulating the collaboration of agencies with new space, commercial and institutional EO data providers for shaping cal/val activities, encouraging dialogue and the exchange of information.

As New Space providers expand the global offering of remote sensing data, there is an elevated need for harmonisation in calibration and validation (Cal/Val) approaches. ESA is taking steps to bolster best practices in Cal/Val, while also fostering innovation, read more on ESA supports calibration and validation of space data for New Space.
