Collection Description
The Aeolus End-of-Life (EOL) is the phase during which satellite and instrument tests were performed, following the end of the nominal Aeolus mission (1 May 2023 to 5 July 2023) and prior to the satellite re-entry on 28 July 2023.
During this phase, several data products were generated:
- Level 1A (L1A) product (ALD_U_N_1A): Provides binary, geolocated, unprocessed data. It is an intermediate output of the Level 0 (L0) to Level 1B (L1B) processing chain and includes geolocation information, satellite and instrument housekeeping data, and Rayleigh and Mie spectrometer counts at the pixel scale of the Accumulation Charge-Coupled Device (ACCD) detector.
- Level 1B (L1B) product (ALD_U_N_1B): Provides binary, geolocated, calibrated observational data acquired during the EOL activities phase.
- Level 2A (L2A) product (ALD_U_N_2A): Provides supplementary binary geophysical data on cloud and aerosol optical properties retrieved from Level 1B data collected during the EOL activities phase.
- Level 2B (L2B) product (ALD_U_N_2B): Provides meteorologically representative horizontal line-of-sight (HLOS) wind components derived from Level 1B.
- Level 2C (L2C) product (ALD_U_N_2C): Provides Aeolus-assisted wind vector profile data from the EOL activities phase. These data are generated through the assimilation of Level 2B wind products into the ECMWF Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model. The L2C product contains ECMWF model wind profiles, including zonal and meridional wind components, at the Aeolus observation locations after assimilation of Level 2B HLOS winds along the orbit. The product is provided both at observation scale (~87 km) and at finer horizontal accumulation scales ranging from ~3 km to ~87 km.
