The majority of the casualties were in the Philippines, but all three countries suffered flooding and damage from the storm. Typhoon Muifa (Philippines) - August 2011Typhoon Muifa passed close to the Philippines in early August 2011, and the large storm caused heavy rain and strong winds to affect the island nation, which lead to 8 deaths. Hurricane Dora (Mexico) - July 2011A Category Four storm, Hurricane Dora caused some limited damage in Mexico during July 2011 when its storm surge hit the coast of southwest Mexico. Typhoon Ma-On (Japan) - July 2011Heavy rain from Typhoon Ma-on caused disruption, flooding and 5 deaths in Japan during July 2011. Tropical Storm Adrian (Mexico) - June 2011Tropical Storm Adrian briefly attained Hurricane status in June 2011 as it approached the coast of Mexico. The short-lived storm was later downgraded, however, and no damage or deaths were reported. Typhoon Songda (Philippines) - May 2011Typhoon Songda passed close to the Philippines in May 2011, and though it did not make landfall the storm caused five deaths and floods and landslides. Tropical Cyclone Bune - March 2011These Envisat images, acquired by the MERIS instrument, show Tropical Cyclone Bune in the Pacific Ocean during March 2011. Cyclone Bingiza (Madagascar) - February 2011Cyclone Bingiza caused 22 deaths in Madagascar during February 2011. Over 25,000 people were left homeless by the destruction resulting from the storm's powerful winds. Cyclone Yasi (Australia) - February 2011Cyclone Yasi was one of the most destructive storms in Australia's recorded history, causing widespread damage in South Australia over a few days in February 2011. Though only one indirect death was caused by the storm, the flooding and winds caused billions of dollars of damage to homes and infrastructure. Typhoon Megi (Philippines/Asia/Taiwan/China) - October 2010Almost 70 people were killed in Asia during October 2010, as Typhoon Megi struck the Philippines, Taiwan and China. The storm caused flash floods and landslides and affected almost one million people. |
