Antarctica is surrounded by huge ice shelves. New research, using ice velocity data from satellites such as ESA's heritage Envisat, has revealed that there is a critical point where these shelves act as a safety band, holding back the ice that flows towards the sea. If lost, it could be the point of no return.

The relocation of the OCF/UK-PAC Multi-Mission infrastructure and services from Farnborough to the Airbus DS data centre in Newport (Wales) planned to start on 8 January 2016 has been postponed for a short period of time and will be re-scheduled in the next few days. A relocation of the existing OCF (UK-PAC) Multi-Mission infrastructure and services from Farnborough to the Airbus Defence and Space Data Centre in Newport (Wales) is currently planned to take place between 8 and 12 January 2016.
The facility move will require a shutdown of all systems, and access to the ERS and Envisat on-line services will be unavailable during the indicated timeframe.

An Oracle and EO-SSO maintenance activities affecting the Earth Observation (EO) services at ESA-ESRIN have been scheduled on Tuesday 15 December from 08:30 to 15:00 CET.

One of Greenland's glaciers is losing five billion tonnes of ice a year to the ocean, according to researchers. While these new findings may be disturbing, they are reinforced by a concerted effort to map changes in ice sheets with different sensors from space agencies around the world.
