Peter Minnett studied Physics at the University of Oxford, UK, and then Physical Oceanography at the University of Southampton, earning a PhD in 1978. His career has taken him to Germany – the University of Kiel – back to the UK to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and on to the NATO Undersea Research Center in La Spezia, Italy. In 1990 he joined Brookhaven National Laboratory, in New York and in 1995 he joined the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami, where he is Professor of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography.

His research interests include the accurate retrieval of sea-surface temperatures from satellite measurements and the physical processes that determine the thermal structure of the ocean surface. He serves on the Science Teams of several NASA and ESA satellite instruments and on the EUMETSAT Mission Experts Team. He has also served two terms on the UNOLS Arctic Icebreaker Coordination Committee and as a Board Member of the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States.
