Dr Valborg (Val) Byfield is Researcher in the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate group in the UK's National Oceanography Centre (NOC). She is day-to-day coordinator of the UNESCO Bilko project (www.bilko.org) and the ESA LearnEO! project (www.learn-eo.org), leading the development of training resources for remote sensing education, and contributing to professional training courses in marine remote sensing around the world. Since 2005 she has been Deputy Science Coordinator for the NERC rapid climate change series of directed programmes (www.rapid.ac.uk).

Val has many years experience in science communication from a variety of projects for ESA, UNESCO and the UK Natural Environment Research Council NERC. Her scientific expertise includes general climate science, oceanography, marine ecology, radiative transfer theory, ocean colour remote sensing and multi-sensor synergies in oil spill monitoring using satellite and airborne remote sensing.
