Phil Browne is a researcher from the Data Assimilation Research Centre (DARC) at the University of Reading. Phil has worked on fully nonlinear particle filtering methods for data assimilation applied to a coupled ocean-atmosphere climate model. His current research involves using data assimilation to estimate the moments of model error for model improvement and the use in modern data assimilation methods.
Phil is an expert in building data assimilation systems with generic models. Phil has developed EMPIRE, software for efficiently applying adjoint free data assimilation techniques to large-scale models using HPC technology. Fields using EMPIRE that Phil is involved with include space weather, ocean biogeochemistry, coupled ocean-atmosphere systems, land surface, and neuroscience.
