How the Earth Explorers help us tackle wildfires
As Europe faces record heatwaves, wildfires have unfortunately become a common feature of the daily news. While commercial missions are providing data to help responders fight wildfires, research missions such as ESA’s Earth Explorers SMOS, EarthCARE, Aeolus and Biomass can also play a part.
EarthCARE measures Doppler velocity of a mid-latitude cyclone over Iceland
EarthCARE’s Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) is providing innovative new insights into mid-latitude cyclones. CPR is the first instrument to provide space-based measurements of the speed of falling rain and snow, and measure deep lower cloud layers.
A fresh look at mid-latitude cyclones thanks to EarthCARE
Over a hundred years since mid-latitude cyclones were first described in detail by Jacob Bjerknes and Halvor Solberg of the Bergen School of Meteorology, new images from the European Space Agency’s EarthCARE satellite give us a more thorough glimpse into them than ever before.

EarthCARE lifetime update: mission targets 2034 and beyond
Just over a year after launch, an analysis of the available fuel on board EarthCARE has revealed that the mission has the potential to remain operational for at least 10 years, more than double its originally designed lifetime.
What is the ESA MAAP?
ESA’s Multi-mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (MAAP) is a data access and discovery catalogue for products from ESA’s Earth Explorer, Heritage, and Third Party Missions.

EarthCARE sees Canadian wildfire smoke spreading over the Northern Hemisphere
Canada is facing an extreme wildfire season in 2025. By 12 June, the Canadian government had reported 225 wildfires in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Over 3.7 million hectares had already been burned by that time.
Orbital-Radar Simulator
This repository contains an orbital radar tool, written in Python, to transform ground-based radar observations into synthetic Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) data. The tool was developed by Lukas Pfitzenmaier and Nils Risse (from U. of Cologne), Pavlos Kollias and Bernat Puigdomenech (from McGill University) and Katia Lamer from (Brookhaven National Laboratory).
EarthCARE spots Canadian wildfire smoke
Canada is facing extreme wildfires in 2025, with over 200 fires reported in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario as of 12 June.

Missed LPS? Here are five highlights worth knowing
more than 6,500 participants from nearly 120 countries gathered at the Living Planet Symposium (LPS 25). With over 4,200 scientific presentations and posters, the symposium was a forum for scientists, academics, representatives from the space industry, as well as students and members of the public.
New EarthCARE data application on tropical cyclones added to Earth Online Visuals
EarthCARE, the most complex Earth Explorer mission to date, is providing new insights into clouds and aerosols. To demonstrate one of the satellite’s data applications, a new feature on tropical cyclones has been added to the Earth Online Visuals website.
