NOAA (POES) AVHRR L1C data products now available
11 Oct 2024
Following the new Heritage Space Programme project on NOAA (POES), AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) level 1C data products are now available via the ESA Heritage Missions Dissemination System.
This AVHRR dataset consists of measurements at 1.1 km full Local Area Coverage (LAC) resolution. The dataset was produced from the whole European Space Agency L1B products collection and covers the time-span 1981-2020 over Europe and selected areas in Africa as well as part of the ‘90s over regions outside of Europe.
The dataset is composed of AVHRR data measured on board NOAA-06 up to NOAA-19 and Metop A/B/C with improved georeferencing accuracy. Furthermore, specific software has been used to convert the counts to reflectances for the visible and near-infrared channels 1, 2, 3A, and to brightness temperatures for the infrared channels 3B, 4, 5. The infrared calibration uses on-board calibration data and is satellite specific without cross-calibration between satellites.
For the visible channels, calculated coefficients from the CIMSS PATMOS-X project, version 2017r1, are used for the visible calibration aiming to minimize spectral differences among the various AVHRR sensors.
Details of the available AVHRR data products, related documentation, and how to access the data are described on the AVHRR L1B/1C local area coverage imagery collection description page.
NOAA (POES) products are freely accessible in accordance with ESA’s Earth observation data policy. An active EO Sign In account is required to download the products. For support with data access, please contact EOHelp.
