Eight years of SMOS Arctic sea ice thickness level now available from SMOS Data dissemination portal

16 May 2018

Daily maps of sea ice thickness based on SMOS Observations, covering the winter seasons in the Arctic for the period of October-April from year 2010/2011 to year 2017/2018, are now available from the SMOS Data dissemination portal.

The Level 3 product contains sea ice thickness up to a depth of about 0.5 -1 m, derived from SMOS brightness temperature observations, geolocated onto a polar-stereographic projection with the 12.5 km grid resolution.

The Level 3 SMOS sea ice thickness product is complementary with similar measurements provided from ESA's CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 Missions.

For further information about the SMOS Sea ice thickness retrieval algorithm and product format, visit: Integrated Climate Data Center - L3C SMOS Sea Ice Thickness.

Similar products for the Antarctic region are under development. The products will be available from the SMOS data dissemination portal by the end of the Austral winter season in 2018.
