Ischia Island: As seen by COSMO-SkyMed

Ischia Island is featured in this COSMO-SkyMed image from 29 June 2016. Ischia is located in the Gulf of Naples off the coast of Italy. Ischia is volcanic in origin, and the peak of Mount Epomeo is visible in this radar image in the centre of the island.

After more than two thousand years of habitation, the island and nearby mainland coast of Italy are largely populated. The brighter areas in the image indicate concentrations of buildings, which are visible surrounding Mount Epomeo on Ischia and to the north east where the density of buildings increases closer to Naples.

West of Naples, the image shows differences in terrain, including distinct circular peaks and depressions. The darker areas are the lakes of Averno, Fusaro, and Miseno. The lighter areas east of the lakes are the Phlegrean Fields, a large volcano with 24 craters, most of which are now extinct. Bright spots in the sea indicate vessels travelling in and out of the Gulf of Naples and passing between Ischia and the coast. The larger vessels leave noticeable wakes in the sea behind them.
