Fires in Mexico and Central America, 1998

In 1998, severe wildfires swept through Mexico and Central America, exacerbated by dry conditions and high temperatures. These night-time satellite images use special camera settings to show heat from the fires: areas with temperatures above 39°C are marked in red, indicating hot spots; cold clouds at temperatures below 1°C appear black, and warmer areas above 32°C are shown in yellow. Coastlines are outlined in white to delineate where the land meets the sea. The images capture forest fires across various areas and countries: the first image includes Yucatan, Guatemala, and Belize; the second shows Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras; the third illustrates Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala; the fourth shows Mexico and Guatemala; the fifth includes Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras; and the last one depicts Mexico.
