Earthquake (Andaman-Nicobar Islands), December 2004

In December 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a devastating tsunami that impacted several Indian Ocean countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and the Maldives. The first three images, acquired by the Envisat ASAR satellite between December 30, 2004, and January 3, 2005, depict the Andaman Islands. The fourth image shows Little Andaman Island, while the fifth captures North Sentinel Island; both are Envisat ASAR images in Multitemporal mode. In these images, newly emerged reefs or coastlines are visible in blue along the coastlines. The blue zones inside the coastline on the Little Andaman image indicate areas affected by the tsunami. The sixth image, captured by Envisat MERIS in Full Resolution multitemporal mode, focuses on the Andaman Island.
