Advanced Training Course in Land Remote Sensing 2012

15-Oct - 20-Oct 2012

Beijing, China

Within the framework of the Dragon Cooperation, a joint collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST), ESA and National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) provided a series of advanced thematic training courses on remote sensing applications hosted by university and research institutions in P.R. China.

In 2012 as part of this initiative, Ph.D. students, post-doctoral and research scientists from P.R. China and other Asian countries interested in land remote sensing applications were invited to attend a six day advanced training course in the subject.

This advanced training course focussed on land remote sensing theory and applications. It was organised around five main components:

  • Future ESA and Chinese EO land missions, i.e. ESA Sentinels, 1, 2 & 3 and Chinese Beijing-2, CBERS 2C and HJ-1-C SAR constellation.
  • Theoretical fundamentals of SAR, Optical and Thermal remote sensing, focussing on exploitation of ESA, Third Party missions and Chinese EO data,
  • Land applications lectures (urban planning, land cover, hazards, terrain motion, forest & vegetation bio-physical retrievals and regional water balance),
  • Practicals using ESA toolboxes (BEAM, NEST and POLSARPRO) and Sentinels' simulation and other EO instruments' data sets,
  • EO data processing and product demonstration for land resources monitoring.

All four components addressed both SAR and Optical/Thermal remote sensing.

The training course included formal lectures by leading Dragon cooperation Chinese and European EO scientists as well as hands-on computing exercises exposing students to remote sensing applications. Practicals will use ESA software tools for the exploitation of EO data, with a focus on ESA, TPM and Chinese EO data products for land applications.

Objectives

The objectives of this advanced Dragon training course were:

  • To inform on past, current and future EO satellite missions and data access from ESA and Chinese EO missions,
  • To demonstrate the exploitation of ESA, TPM and Chinese EO data for land applications,
  • Introduce available software tools and methods for the exploitation of ERS, Envisat, TPM and Explorers missions' satellite data

The course was hosted by the National Key Lab of Microwave Imaging Technology, Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, P.R. China.
