Aerosol particles are widespread throughout Earth’s atmosphere. They are emitted by deserts, oceans, volcanoes, wildfires and plants, or produced through anthropogenic processes such as combustion and agricultural activities.
5 Mar 2026
Data from commercial Earth observing satellites, shared through ESA’s Third Party Missions (TPMs) programme, support research around Europe.
25 Feb 2026
Research drawing on novel data from Spire Global has enabled the generation of Arctic-wide sea ice maps, marking a major step forward for detecting change with navigation signals.

It has been four years since the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted, causing widespread destruction across the Pacific island nation of Tonga. Now, an international report details how the eruption affected the stratosphere, climate and ozone layer. Data from Swarm, along with dozens of other satellites, supported the assessment.

When the Port of Setúbal in Portugal commissioned a comprehensive survey of the Sado Estuary in 2024, the project presented an opportunity to test whether satellite-derived bathymetry could complement traditional ship-based methods. The results demonstrated how high-resolution satellite data, disseminated via ESA's Third Party Missions (TPM) programme can fill crucial gaps left by standard Earth observation missions.
