What was the purpose of ROVE 1975-1981?

The Dutch research team ROVE (Radar Observation on Vegetation), funded by the remote sensing organisation NIWARS (Nederlandse Interdepartementale Werkgemeenschap Applicatie onderzoek van Remote Sensing-Technieken), started in 1974 to investigate the scattering of microwaves by crops and soils, in order to help interpretation of radar imagery.

During 1975-1981 radar data and accompanying groundtruth information were collected from experiments at agricultural trial farms.

The aim of the programme was to investigate the microwave scattering of crops, to develop scatter models and to apply them in crop classification and biomass detection. The ground-based programme was extended with SLAR flights and inventories over areas in Flevoland.

What was the outcome of ROVE 1975-1981?

Interpretation of the data and conclusions about the results are beyond the scope of this report, but a list of publications concerning the material is supplied in Chapter 5.
