What was the purpose of NoSREx-I, -II and -III?

The Nordic Snow Radar Experiment (NoSREx) took place between November 2009 and May 2010. The objective of the campaign was to provide a continuous time series of active and passive microwave observations of snow cover in a representative location of the Arctic boreal forest area, covering a whole winter season.

The activity was a part of Phase A studies for the proposed ESA COld REgions Hydrology High-resolution Observatory (CoReH2O) dual frequency SAR mission.

What was the outcome of NoSREx-I, -II and -III?

The NoSREx campaign succeeded in providing a backscatter time series of snow cover in the boreal forest zone at X- and Ku bands for nearly 130 days of continuous acquisitions, most of these in dry snow conditions. The time series is complemented by near-simultaneous observations at passive microwave frequencies extending from L- to W band, and comprehensive automatic and manual in situ observations of snow, soil and atmospheric parameters. These factors make the NoSREx dataset a unique resource for investigating both the backscatter and emission properties of evolving snow cover for the purposes of microwave remote sensing.
