What was the purpose of CryoVEx Ant 2014 to 2015?

The aim of CryoVEx ANT 2014 to 2015 was to perform altimeter measurements at a designated validation site in the vicinity of the Schirmacher Oasis, near Kohnen and Neumayer as well as in the Pine Island Glacier drainage basin. These measurements were gathered in support of calibration and validation of the CryoSat mission. Parallel to the airborne survey, ground-based surveys were carried out by the Institute for Planetary Geodesy of the Technical University Dresden in the blue ice area near the Schirmacher Oasis and by British scientists of the NERC project ISTAR in the Pine Island Glacier drainage basin.

What was the outcome of CryoVEx Ant 2014 to 2015?

Successfully accomplished simultaneous ground-based and airborne measurements in the blue-ice area near Schirmacheroase / East Antarctica have provided a comprehensive picture of the investigated region. These measurements can be regarded as a repetition and extension of previous activities in this region (Antarctic campaigns 20th Indian Antarctic Expedition, CryoVEx 2008/2009, CryoVEx 2010/2011). They have allowed to extend mass balance studies as well as to gain a better understanding of the accuracy of the surface elevation detected by ASIRAS. Furthermore, they will possibly help to detect annual elevation changes in ablation areas.
