Title:  Copernicus Sentinel-1 over Red Sea

Description: Copernicus Sentinel-1 images acquired on 13 (west) and 14 (east) October 2019. Each segment is composed of three scenes acquired in Interferometric Wide swath (IW) mode. The scenes acquired over the sea were processed using a RCSE (Radar Cross Section Equalisation) enabling to keep the same brightness and contrast from near to far range (East to West of these descending orbits). The scenes acquired over land use the VV (Vertical transmit Vertical receive) and VH (Vertical transmit Horizontal receive) polarisation and maps the NDI (Normalized Difference Index) between VH and VV.

The tanker Sabiti apparently underwent damage, which would be at the origin of the long oil spill. The position of the tanker is represented by the small white circle along the leak, northwest of the image (see a zoom on the "2D_view"). The undulations of the oil slick are due to complex ocean currents in the Red Sea and to a lesser extent to surface winds.

Open a "2D_animation" on the VtWeb Platform to  watch an animation superimposing the route of the oil slick on a length of more than 1,300 km.
