ESOV Software Tools (ESOV NG)
ESOV - the Earth Observation Swath and Orbit Visualisation tool - provides users with the means to visualise the instrument swaths of all ESA Earth Observation Satellites and assist in understanding where and when satellite measurements are made and ground contact is possible.
The ESOV NG application has been developed in Java with the objective of improving and modernising the existing ESOV Classic tool. It replaces the platform dependent GUI implementation used in ESOV Classic (X11 for UNIX-based platforms and MFC/C++ for Windows) by a user interface module developed using Swing and the JIDE Docking and Action Frameworks.
The swath calculation component is using a JNI-based wrapper for the Earth Explorer CFI libraries instead of the Envisat CFI and the rendering engine has been implemented using GeoTools. Furthermore, all the input, output and configuration data files used in ESOV NG are XML files.
The ESOV NG software is a free tool made available to any user involved in the ESA Earth Observation mission preparation. ESOV NG allows users to visualise and print Instrument swaths, Ground tracks, Zone coverages, Ground Station Visibility and to generate overpass table for generic Earth Observation LEO satellites.
ESOV is delivered with support for Envisat, ERS-1, ERS-2, CryoSat, ADM-Aeolus, SMOS, Metop, EarthCARE, Seosat and thanks to its plug-in architecture it allows custom satellites to be added by users.
