New Swarm Level 2 magnetic field models released

27 April 2017

The third release of the Swarm magnetic field models is now available to users. The new models are based on improved Swarm magnetometer data (MAGx_LR_1B data products, baseline 05) covering the period from launch to the end of 2016, i.e. one additional year in comparison to the previous release.

The improvement of the magnetometer data features a newly introduced temperature correction and interpolation of star tracker data as well as an update of the magnetometer vector data calibration and characterization. For further information about the data specification please refer to the Data Quality page. The magnetometer data and magnetic field models can be downloaded from the ESA FTP server, where the data is located in the "/Advanced/Magnetic_Data/L1B_MAGxLR_0501" folder and models can be found the '/Level2longterm' folder. The following models are available:

  • Core field models MCO_SHA_2C and MCO_SHA_2D
  • Large-scale magnetospheric field model MMA_SHA_2C, which includes the Earth-induced counterpart, from the comprehensive inversion; the fast track model MMA_SHA_2F is provided daily with a few days latency
  • Lithospheric field models MLI_SHA_2C and MLI_SHA_2D
  • Ionospheric field models MIO_SHA_2C and MIO_SHA_2D

For more details on the models' content and format, please refer to the Level 2 Product Definitions and Level 2 Product Format pages.
