Conference on Big Data from Space - BiDS'17

28 - 30 November 2017

Big Data from Space refers to the massive spatio-temporal Earth and Space observation data collected by space-borne and ground based sensors, and to synergetic use of data coming from other sources and communities. This domain is currently facing sharp development with numerous new initiatives and breakthroughs ranging from intelligent sensors to data science. These developments are empowering new approaches and applications in various and diverse domains influencing life on Earth, from sensing cities, monitoring human settlements and urban areas to climate change and security.

The objective of this conference is to stimulate interactions and bring together researchers, engineers, users, infrastructure and service providers, interested in exploiting Big Data from Space.

The BiDS'17 Conference is co-organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen). BiDS'17 will be hosted by the Centre National d'√Čtudes Spatiales (CNES) in Toulouse.

HAPS4ESA - Towards an ESA Stratospheric High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS) programme for Earth Observation, Telecommunications and Navigation

High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) are stratospheric platforms that stay over a fixed point on Earth from weeks to months. Compared to ground-based systems, towers or aircraft, HAPS operate quasi-stationarily at an altitude of approximately 20 km. This allows them to complement or extend the capabilities of satellites in the domains of Earth Observation, Telecommunication and Navigation with the potential to further integrate with ground-based infrastructure. The European industry and research community is committed to develop HAPS systems while the advancing miniaturisation of sensor and communication technologies provides compact payloads compatible with the weight and power limitations of these platforms. Integrating HAPS into satellites systems offers new opportunities to provide improved products and services.

Capitalising on these developments, the European Space Agency is reaching out to the Earth Observation, Telecommunication and Navigation communities to present and discuss synergies between satellites and HAPS as well as to collect feedback and recommendations regarding a potential ESA HAPS programme.

4th Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop / CCI Soil Moisture User Workshop

18 - 20 September 2017

The Satellite Soil Moisture and Application Workshop aims to discuss and reconcile recent methodological advances in the development, validation and application of global satellite soil moisture data. The workshop series is unique by bringing together satellite users and developers to focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture data from passive or active microwave satellite missions (SMAP, SMOS, ASCAT, AMRS-2, Sentinel-1, and other legacy missions). The workshop follows up former editions held at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati (Italy, 2013), in Amsterdam (Netherlands, 2014) and in New York (USA, 2016). The report from the 3rd workshop was published in the GEWEX News November 2016.


The CCI Soil Moisture User Workshop is similar in scope but particularly invites users of the CCI Soil Moisture products. Users from any relevant application area are invited to present their experiences with the data and provide ideas for future product improvements. The CCI Soil Moisture User Workshop is an event organised within the framework of ESA's Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Soil Moisture project.


Both workshops will be held at the Vienna University of Technology, on 19-20 September 2017 and on 18 September 2017, respectively.

Validating Copernicus Sentinel data using Fiducial Reference Measurement

20 - 21 June 2017

A satellite validation international workshop will be held in Plymouth, UK, from 20 to 21 June 2017.

The Copernicus Sentinel Atlantic Meridional Transect Fiducial Reference Measurements workshop will serve as a forum for discussing the performance of Sentinel -1, -2 and -3 at retrieving ocean colour, sea surface temperature and information about upper ocean dynamics in the open ocean and coastal environments.It will identify potential strategies for the validation of Sentinel missions in the future.
The workshop should be beneficial to anyone with an interest in the validation of satellite data; four main themes will be addressed:

  • Fiducial Reference Measurement methods and protocols
  • Ocean Colour validation
  • Sea Surface Temperature validation
  • Validation of upper ocean dynamics.

Fringe 2017

The European Space Agency is organising Fringe 2017, the 10th International Workshop on "Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry and Sentinel-1 InSAR".

The event will be hosted at the Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, from 05 to 09 June 2017.

Fringe 2017 is a free workshop, and it is open to ESA Principal Investigators, co-investigators, Sentinel-1 users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries.

ADM-Aeolus CAL/VAL Workshop

28 - 30 March 2017

Co-organised by ESA and MeteoFrance and supported by CNES, the ADM-Aeolus Cal/Val Workshop will be held at the Centre International de Conférences in Toulouse, France, from 28 to 30 March 2017. The objective of the workshop is to prepare the Aeolus CAL/VAL activities and teams for the Aeolus launch in late 2017.


During the workshop, the organization and readiness of the ADM-Aeolus CAL/VAL activities and teams will be detailed and exercised. These activities will be instrumental to the mission calibration and validation in-flight, and are launched to ensure and demonstrate that ADM-Aeolus will meet its mission requirements. ESA is currently implementing the Doppler Wind Lidar mission 'ADM-Aeolus' as part of its Living Planet Programme.

Fourth Swarm Science Meeting & geodetic missions workshop

20 - 24 March 2017

Jointly with partners in Canada, the European Space Agency is organizing a cornerstone event in the area of exploitation of data from Swarm and geodetic satellite missions, including GOCE, GRACE and future missions. The Fourth Swarm Science Meeting and the accompanying Geodetic Missions Workshop will be held at the Park Lodge Hotel in Banff, Alberta, Canada alongside the CryoSat North-American Science Meeting from 20 to 24 March 2017.

In these co-located meetings the European Space Agency aims to address science, applications and services in the context of its Earth Explorer series of missions, ranging in focus from the Earth's outer core to the magnetosphere. Specifically, as the Swarm mission is about to complete three years of extremely successful science operations, the meeting will bring together the wider international scientific community to explore and develop scientific and application synergies and to propel the mission into its next phase.

North American CryoSat science meeting and geodetic missions workshop

20 - 24 March 2017

The first North American CryoSat Science Meeting will take place in Banff (Alberta, Canada) from 20 to 24 March 2017.

The meeting will provide a unique and timely forum for scientists and end-users of CryoSat data to share the state-of-the-art in research and applications, review mission achievements and prepare for the continued use of the CryoSat mission in the future. Organised approximately seven years after launch of CryoSat, the meeting will highlight areas where the mission has made significant contribution including cryosphere, oceanography, geodesy, hydrology, topography, meteorology and climate change. Presentations on the use of CryoSat data for operational applications and demonstrations of novel scientific applications are also encouraged. The meeting will be instrumental to outline the international collaboration in the exploitation of data, to propose new scientific requirements, to identify new scientific challenges in view of the extension beyond 2019 and, in general, for its possible successor.

The meeting is held in parallel with the Fourth Swarm science meeting. There will be a one-day joint session to address common thematic applications related to gravimetric applications.

WorldCover 2017 Conference

14 - 16 March 2017

The European Space Agency together with GEO, FAO and EU are organising the WorldCover 2017 Conference to be held at ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 14 to 16 March 2017.

The WorldCover 2017 Conference aims to provide scientists and users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their on-going research and application development activities by using data from past and current satellites. The outcome of the conference will help to further shape the next generation of R&D activities in the frame of ESA Earth Observation Programmes.

POLinSAR 2017 workshop

23 - 27 January 2017

The European Space Agency is organising POLinSAR 2017, the 8th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, to be hosted in ESRIN, Frascati, Italy from 23 to 27 January 2017. This workshop will be followed by the 4th ESA Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry, to be held at the same location during the following week.

The main objectives of the POLinSAR 2017 course are to:

  • Provide a forum for scientific exchange
  • Present the latest exploitation results from fully polarimetric airborne and spaceborne systems and assess the state-of-the-art
  • Review retrieved bio-geophysical parameters and their accuracy
  • Make recommendations for algorithm development and new products
  • Support the preparation for ESA and Third Party fully polarimetric mission exploitation (BIOMASS, NOVASAR-S, RCM, SAOCOM-CS, TerraSAR-L etc.)
  • Present innovative polarimetric applications and ideas for future polarimetric mission concepts
  • Report on progress/status of POLinSAR 2015 and BIOMASS 2015 recommendations
